Prof. Raquel Peixoto

Associate Professor, Marine Science, KAUST

Biography

Prof. Peixoto is one of the main researchers responsible for creating a new field of research on coral probiotics, which is growing and boosting the development of a broader and vibrant area of research on probiotics for wildlife. Her experiments have proved the concept that probiotics mitigate coral bleaching and can also prevent coral mortality. She has received several distinctions and prizes for this breakthrough, including the prestigious 2023 Rachel Carson Award in Applied Microbiology SDG 14. She is also the chair of the Marine Science program at KAUST, vice president and upcoming President of the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME), co-chair of the conservation committee at the International Coral Reef Society (and head of ICRS’s COP delegations) and member of several scientific advisory boards, including those for CORDAP and ASM climate change committee.
